Together building better communities

During the month of April the municipal council led by His Worship Mayor Anele Ntsangani embarked on Integrated Development Plan ( IDP) and Budget Road Shows,  visiting all  21 wards of Nkonkobe.


The purpose of the visits was to listen to the needs and views of the community regarding their development, and devise strategies on how these can find expression in the municipal IDP for the 2015/16 financial year


Consume with care

International Environmental Week is celebrated annually during the first week of June and this year’s theme was “Seven billion dreams, one planet, consume with care”. Nkonkobe Municipality joined in on the celebrations when it hosted the Amathole District municipality environmental week celebrations on the 4 – 5 June 2015 at the Great Fish Game reserve and Sheshegu location respectively.


Boxing Revived

Middledrift had a pleasure of hosting boxing talent from around Amatole region. This happened on 30 May as the Amathole Boxing Organisation together with Nkonkobe Municipality and the Nkonkobe Sport Council held the Amathole Boxing Tournament.

The tournament saw boxers from Nkonkobe, Ngqushwa, Mnquma and Amahlathi go against each other for prizes and a chance to participate in the provincial tournament. This tournament comes after the Mayor of Nkonkobe Municipality announced during the previous Mayor’s Cup that the municipality would take steps to develop boxing in the region.

Under the spotlight …

The Free Basic Services unit is a unit attached to the revenue section within the Budget and Treasury office. Its main task is to provide free basic services to indigent and destitute residents within the Nkonkobe municipal area.

The Free Basic Services provided by the municipality include refuse removal, electricity and alternative energy (paraffin) to areas where there is no Eskom grid.

Empowering communities for effective participation

On Friday  20 March,  Amathole District Municipality (ADM), in partnership with Nkonkobe Local Municipality (NLM) held a Civic Education Programme to educate  community members about the functions and powers of both municipalities.

ADM Speaker, Councillor Samnkelo Janda said: “The purpose of the programme is  to empower communities with knowledge so that they can effectively participate in governance.

Project to retain struggle history

In a bid to make the Fort Beaufort Museum appeal to all races, retain struggle history and praise unsung local heroes, the department of sport, recreation, arts and culture (Dsrac) launched the “room of struggle” exhibition, on 13 February.

The department has renovated the museum, creating what it calls “room of struggle exhibition” which has pictures of both local and national struggle heroes.


Dsrac MEC Pemmy Majodina said the project was part of a transformation agenda in which museums would reflect the national identity.


Nkonkobe recognizes local heroes

The 5th December 2014 is a day to remember for all recipients of awards during the Nkonkobe Community Builder of the Year Awards Ceremony held at the Alice Happy Rest Hall. This day was made extra special by the recognition given to two Springbok players: Ayanda Kahla - National Ladies Cricket Player and Nolusindiso Booi - National Ladies Rugby Player who originate from Nkonkobe.

Beauty, brains and all …

The glitz and glamour of Hollywood was at the Middledrift Multi-Purpose Centre when Nkonkobe Municipality held its annual Miss Nkonkobe Beauty Pageant 2014/15 on the 6th December 2014. The choreography, entertainment and stage presence of the contestants were all of the things seen on major pageants and television.
