Boxing Revived

Middledrift had a pleasure of hosting boxing talent from around Amatole region. This happened on 30 May as the Amathole Boxing Organisation together with Nkonkobe Municipality and the Nkonkobe Sport Council held the Amathole Boxing Tournament.

The tournament saw boxers from Nkonkobe, Ngqushwa, Mnquma and Amahlathi go against each other for prizes and a chance to participate in the provincial tournament. This tournament comes after the Mayor of Nkonkobe Municipality announced during the previous Mayor’s Cup that the municipality would take steps to develop boxing in the region.

The event was a treat for people of Middledrift as they came in numbers to watch the tournament. The newly built Middledrift Multi-purpose Centre was filled with chants from enthused spectators. The event was also graced by the presence of Mr Nogqala from the Eastern Cape Boxing Organisation and Mr Mofu who is a national boxing coach.

Siphe Mxoli, a boxer from Eyethu Boxing Club in Seymour won big on the day as he  took the best boxer and  best bout awards. A team consisting of boxers, coaches, officials and referees was chosen to participate in the provincial tournament.
